Some causes of facial pain include:
  • Trigeminal Neuralgia – a painful condition usually involves the lower face, nose and maybe the eye
  • Migraine – usual symptoms are throbbing pain at the side of the head and face, preceded by aura such as blinking or flashing lights and accompanied by nausea and sickness
  • Sinusitis – sinuses, which are hollow spaces around our cheekbones, can become infected and cause pain and pressure around the cheeks and forehead, and can resemble a migraine. Usually there are signs of infection such as fever
  • Deviated Nasal Septum – which is a cartilage that separates your nasal passages. An injury or and illness may damage it with symptoms of snoring, nose bleeds, difficulty breathing and blocked nose
  • TMJ - Temporomandibular Joint – links your lower jaw to your skull. Grinding your teeth, clenching your jaw muscles, injury, chewing on hard things can result in pain, especially with the act of chewing
  • Shingles – usually this shows up on your body such as on the chest or the back but sometimes on the face, it appears as painful blisters. The pain can persist for several years after the rash has healed laser acupuncture can help.
  • Infection or Abscess – in the side of the mouth such as teeth, gums, lips etc
  • Glaucoma – a collection of fluid in the front part of the eye can increase the pressure, which in turn can cause damage to the optic nerve, getting worse over time and can cause pain and blindness
  • Oral Cancer
  • Cluster Headaches – often the same time of the day, eyes and nose may get red and inflamed
  • Salivary Gland Infection

Haemorrhoids are swollen veins of the lower rectal area, usually resulting from pressure. They can be external or internal. They can result in pain, itching, irritation and bleeding. It can be difficult to find a comfortable position to sit. It is quite a common condition, over 4% of the population in the western world suffer with it. It is most common in both men and women aged between 45 and 65. In severe cases, they may get thrombosed and a clot might form which can be very painful, in some cases ongoing bleeding may lead to anaemia and in rare circumstances piles may indirectly lead to faecal incontinence, hence it is always advisable to go and see your GP.

Here are some of the causes:
1. Straining during bowel movement
2. Sitting for long periods of time
3. Chronic constipation or diarrhoea
4. Obesity
5. Low fibre diet

Frozen shoulder, also known as Adhesive Capsulitis which means sticky shoulder describes this condition accurately it occurs in about 5% of the population. More common in women than men, most ladies in the beginning of the condition may find it hard to reach the clasp of their brassier, back pockets, worse at night and when lying on the affected side can be excruciating and affect sleep.

Usually it hits people between the ages of 40 – 60 and be associated with other diseases such as Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Metabolic Syndrome (obesity, blood sugar issues and chronic low grade inflammation). There are 3 phases of the symptoms of frozen shoulder:
Phase 1: Freezing also known as the painful phase it can last from 2-10mths
Phase 2: The frozen stage, when the shoulder becomes stiff and movement is limited which can last from 9 to 14mths. The pain is more frequent with over use.
Phase 3: Thawing which could take from 3mths to 1 year or more.

Dr Bhatti has been treating frozen shoulder with a complementary approach for more than 25 years and his experience shows that earlier intervention, combination of conventional, complementary therapies, physio and exercise can sometimes give great results.
In complementary therapies which can give positive results are :
  • Medical Needle Free Acupuncture

  • Medical Trigger Point Therapy/Needle free Mesotherapy
  • Nutrition/Natural joint and soft tissue support
  • Conventional therapies usually include :
  • Medication

Other conditions which mimic frozen shoulder are:

  3. Wear and tear of shoulder joint
  4. Inflammation of Bicep tendon
  5. Pain coming from the neck due to disc deterioration in the cervical area
  6. Autoimmune diseases such as Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis and sometimes cancer.

Hence it is very important that if you suspect you have a frozen shoulder that you contact your doctor and rule out any other conditions.

I have found this condition affects young and old quite frequently during my work in Orthopaedics in Merlin Park hospital where I worked for more than two years. I have also worked in Department of Orthopaedics in Port Washington hospital and Milwaukee General Hospital in the USA and I found it to be more common over there than it was over here.

Hip joint is one of the large joints in our body and it plays a vital role in our movements such as forward, backward movements and rotation.

Pain can be temporary or chronic depending on the condition.

HERE ARE ONLY SOME OF THE CAUSES:
  1. ARTHRITIS is a common condition which can be inflammatory or non inflammatory. There are many different types of Arthritis it can affect young as well as old.
  2. INJURY which can be mild or severe and in some cases can lead to fractures, and dislocation which may require hospitalisation and surgery.
  3. SPORTS INJURY SPRAIN which can be mild or severe leading to muscular damage and can lead to sciatica.
  4. INFECTION in the hip joint or also known as septic arthritis if not treated promptly can lead to long term and sometimes serious complications, such as osteomyelitis.
  5. HEAMONTANA or collection of blood in the hip joint is usually a result of an injury and can become very painful and might require surgical intervention.
  6. HIP PAIN due to a condition called ILEO –TIBIAL BAND SYNDROME is also quite a painful condition .
  7. A BIG THICK WALLET in your back pocket can also result in pain in your hip and buttock sometimes resulting in Sciatica.
  8. IF YOU DRIVE FOR LIVING especially without taking any breaks or if you lead a sedentary lifestyle that can also result with pain in the hip, back, or neck .
  9. OSTEOPOROSIS.
  10. PSORIASIS CAN BE A CAUSE OF ARTHRITIS (psoriatic arthritis)
  11. INGUINAL HERNIA (hernia in your groin).
  12. TENDINITIS and there are many more causes of hip pain.

SYMPTOMS:
Limping, Groin pain, Swelling, Joint may look red and hot and tender to touch. you might find difficulty sleeping due to pain and have restricted, stiff and painful movements.
Always consult your GP to rule out any serious conditions causing your hip pain who might refer you to a specialist for further investigations.

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

5/6/2019

This article by Dr Bhatti M.B.B.S.D.C.H.R.C.P.S appeared in Galway Advertiser on June 5 2019

Restless leg syndrome, also known as Willis-Ekbom Disease, can cause an unpleasant sensation in the legs with the irresistible urge to move them.

The symptoms can be mild or severe. When severe, it can nearly affect all aspects of a person’s life leading to anxiety and depression, or could worsen an existing condition.
People suffering from RLS find it hard to explain the sensation in their legs. They describe it as being a throbbing/itching/creeping/crawling/pulling sensation. These symptoms usually affect only one side but sometimes both sides can be affected, leading to tossing and turning in bed, constantly moving the legs while sitting or pacing the floor. Symptoms are usually worse at night.
Some causes:
1. People suffering from Parkinson’s have a higher chance of developing RLS pointing towards some involvement of the basal ganglia of the brain
2. Iron deficiency

3. Smoking (nicotine )

4. Coffee and tea (caffeine )
5. Alcohol
6. Certain medications such as some anti-histamines, some anti-depressants and some anti-psychotic medication
7. Pregnancy, often the last trimester
8. Neuropathy or nerve damage
9. Sleep deprivation and sleep apnoea
10. It is also common in people in the end stage of kidney disease especially on haemodialysis
In Dr Bhatti’s clinic he uses a multi-pronged approach in treating this and many other conditions with evidence-based therapies such as Micro-immunotherapy, Physiological Regulating Medicine (P.R.M ), Gut Health and Microbiome restoration, Nutritional and Nutraceutical therapies, Lifestyle Medicine, Natural Hormonal Balancing, Glandular support, Soft tissue and joint support, Complex Homeopathy, Herbals, and Needle-free Medical Acupuncture, Therapeutic Mindfulness and CBT techniques to achieve excellent results.
