What is causing my constipation?

26/12/2018

If you have less than three bowel movements a week, it is usually considered constipation. Most people suffer from constipation once in a while, but some people suffer from chronic constipation which can affect their daily life. Usually they feel sluggish, lethargic and sometimes irritable. It can affect appetite and concentration. Some people are afraid to eat or go to the toilet.

Symptoms:
  1. Passing hard stools
  2. Difficulty in having a bowel movement
  3. Sometimes a lot of straining is required which in turn can lead to other problems
  4. Movement is hardly ever satisfactory
  5. In severe cases a person might need manual evacuation
  6. Some people are prescribed laxatives or enemas but your doctor should always be consulted before starting any self treatment or therapy.

Causes:
  • Stress
  • Dehydration
  • Any physical blockage such as an obstruction, narrowing of the bowel or anal fissure
  • Cancer
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Strokes
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s
  • It is very common in pregnancy
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Diabetes
  • It can run in families

Constipation is more common in people who lead a sedentary lifestyle, people who do not drink enough water, people who eat a lot of processed or junk foods, people who suffer from anxiety/depression and take certain medications eg anti-depressants and codeine etc.

If your doctor has identified a cause and ruled out any serious condition associated with your constipation then complementary therapies can play a great role in helping this condition.

In our clinic we use a multi pronged approach in treating most conditions with evidence based therapies such as Physiological Regulating Medicine (P.R.M), gut health and microbiome restoration, nutritional and nutraceutical therapies, lifestyle medicine, natural hormonal balancing, glandular support, soft tissue and joint support, complex homeopathy, herbals, needle free mesotherapy and needle free acupuncture to achieve excellent results.

To discuss conditions treated and therapies offered at our clinic, contact Dr. Bhatti at (087) 1915051 or email health@drbhatti.ie.   During your first office visit, Dr. Bhatti may ask you at length about your health-condition, lifestyle and behaviour.  Please consult your GP before starting new treatment.

Note: We have special packages tailor-made to suit you and your finances. Please ask for our special offers.

Some common triggers for migraine

19/12/2018

Migraine occurs three times more in women than in men. There is evidence of a genetic element and can run in the families. Migraines more often occur in people with epilepsy, strokes, asthma, anxiety, stress and neurological disorders. Migraines occur equally in children but become more common in girls after puberty. In children migraine may show up as stomach pains (stomach migraine), nausea, vertigo, unsteady balance and behavioural changes.

Warning symptoms such as aura may occur before the headache e.g. flashing lights and blind spots which can be very disabling and the pain can last from hours to days. It can be a pulsating or throbbing pain with nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to light and sounds, blurred vision, tingling sensation on the side of the face, dizziness, fatigue and sometimes with the loss of power in the extremities.

If you have any of these symptoms or similar symptoms, you should always consult your G.P as soon as possible to rule out and treat any serious conditions.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE COMMON TRIGGERS:
  • Flashing lights
  • Stress / anxiety
  • Hormonal changes
  • Lack of sheep
  • Lack of food and low blood sugar levels
  • Dehydration
  • Food binges
  • Foods such as M.S.G, chocolate, soya sauce, cheese, processed foods especially processed meats
  • Fermented foods
  • Caffeine can be both help or a hinderance
  • Good to keep a journal to keep a track of your triggers

In our clinic we use a multi pronged approach in treating most conditions with evidence based therapies such as Physiological Regulating Medicine (P.R.M), gut health and microbiome restoration, nutritional and nutraceutical therapies, lifestyle medicine, natural hormonal balancing, glandular support, soft tissue and joint support, complex homeopathy, herbals, needle free mesotherapy and needle free acupuncture to achieve excellent results.

Our overall health depends on healthy digestion, poor digestion and sluggish bowel can lead to a whole host of symptoms due to negative side effects messing up our mind and body.

Good or bad indigestion can affect your energy levels and how productive you are can affect your mood, how you interact with otheres, about work, school, college, home, social life and how you feel at the end of every day, physically and mentally.

Usually poor digestion can lead to tiredness, heavy and bloated feeling, constipation or diarrhoea, gas or trapped wind which can be embarrassing and can affect your concentration, performance and enjoyment of life. If left untreated it can lead to stomach pains, sometimes you are afraid to eat and other times you might feel ravenous and feel like eating everything around you, later you might feel so sluggish that you feel like doing nothing or you feel like lying down or going to bed.

Needle-free acupuncture promotes healing without side effects

15/12/2018

The aim of Acupuncture is to restore and maintain health through the stimulation of specific points on the body. Traditionally this treatment has been carried out using needles but modern advances have introduced two new methods - Electro-acupuncture and Laser-acupuncture - both of which offer a no needle alternative to the traditional approach.

The most common use of laser acupuncture is to treat specific conditions especially skin conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, ulcers. Laser acupuncture has also been noted to help in minimising anxiety, pain and the withdrawal symptoms for those trying to quit smoking. Laser acupuncture is extremely popular therapy usually performed by Doctors, Naturopaths, Chiropractors and other practitioners for relieving tension in the muscles, reducing muscle irritability, reducing Inflammation, and improving nutritional absorption, especially to the muscle, skin, soft tissue, tendons, and ligaments giving great results for musculoskeletal conditions such as stiffness, sports injuries, arthritis, fibromyalgia and old injuries.

There are so many conditions (digestive and menstrual disorders) which can be helped with this treatment and Dr Bhatti has been using this and other complementary care systems successfully for more than 30 years.

What is causing my phelgm/mucus? Can Physiological Regulating Medicine help?

14/12/2018

Mucus is normal and forms a lining inside the lungs of a healthy person and helps keep our lungs from drying out and it also forms a barrier against bacteria and viruses.

All healthy bodies require mucus in the lungs and other parts of our bodies but too much of it can lead to uncomfortable symptoms.

Here are only some of the causes of phlegm/extra mucus:
  • Allergies (Hay fever, Asthma, Food Allergies etc )
  • Colds/Flu’s/Sinusitis
  • Tobacco (smoke), air pollution
  • Lung disease e.g. infections such as pneumonia
  • Lung Cancer
  • Hiatus Hernia
  • Acid Reflux
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Cystic Fibrosis etc.

Always consult your Doctor first for any medical advice and to rule out any serious illness. Once the cause is identified and is not serious, complementary therapies can help a lot. Dr Bhatti has been treating allergies/intolerances for the last 30 years.

In our clinic we use a multi pronged approach in treating this and many other conditions with evidence based therapies such as Physiological Regulating Medicine (P.R.M), gut health and microbiome restoration, nutritional and nutraceutical therapies, lifestyle medicine, natural hormonal balancing, glandular support, soft tissue and joint support, complex homeopathy, herbals, needle free mesotherapy and needle free acupuncture to achieve excellent results.

Can you prevent and fight cancer with the help of foods?

10/12/2018

According to the American Institute of Cancer Research, your plate should contain two thirds plant-based foods and one third animal protein as a cancer-fighting tool.
Here are some foods which contain some cancer-fighting nutrients:
  • Fruits and vegetables, the more colourful the better they are at preventing and fighting this disease.
  • Whole grains, breakfast cereals fortified with B vitamins.
  • Folate and carotenoid-rich foods such as beans, asparagus, eggs, spinach, sunflower seeds, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, Brussels sprouts, kale.
  • Tomatoes, the fresher the better, but even the processed tomato sauce and tomato juice may help fight cancer.
  • Green tea is a strong contender but further research is ongoing.
  • Purple and red grapes contain an antioxidant called Resveratrol with some inflammation-fighting properties. Some scientists believe that inflammation might be a trigger for cancer, however, this remains inconclusive.
  • Other fruits such as oranges, melons, blueberries and strawberries are a good source of vitamins and folate.
  • Water may protect you against bladder cancer as it may help dilute the concentration of cancer-causing substances in the bladder.
  • Turmeric is an exotic Indian spice with curcumin as a main ingredient with a potential to fight cancer, research is ongoing.
  • Other foods and spices with health-giving properties such as ginger, garlic, cinnamon, nuts, flaxseed, olive oil, fish, peas, beans, lentils, squash and whole foods.

In our clinic we use a multi pronged approach in treating this and many other conditions with evidence based therapies such as Low Dose Medicine (L.D.M,), gut health and microbiome restoration, nutritional and nutraceutical therapies, lifestyle medicine, natural hormonal balancing, glandular support, soft tissue and joint support, complex homeopathy, herbals, needle free mesotherapy and needle free acupuncture to achieve excellent results.

Compulsive exercise disorder or anorexia athletica

5/12/2018

Regular exercise is essential for our overall health and is encouraged by most scientists and doctors. But when exercising becomes a compulsion then it may result in harm rather than good.
Here are some potential signs of compulsive exercise disorder:

1. Refusal to skip a workout even if you are tired, sick or hurt.
2. Feeling anxious or guilty when missing even one workout.
3. Feeling preoccupied with weight and exercise.
4. Tendency to eat less after missing a workout.
5. If it starts affecting your social life.
6. Basing your self-worth on the number of recent workouts.

Sometimes Compulsive exercise disorder can go hand in hand with Compulsive eating disorder. People with an eating disorder may become obsessed with exercising in order to lose weight. Some scientists also call this condition as Anorexia Athletica. Others sometimes call it Exercise Addiction and it's severity may vary. It is not a fully recognised condition. However compulsions and addictions can be helped, a holistic approach is the key.

Chronic stress can affect nearly every organ in our body

4/12/2018

Stress is an everyday part of life. If you are suffering from acute or chronic medical conditions there would be some degree of anxiety and stress related to it. Over 75% of our Primary Care doctor visits are due to stress related illness.
Stress can be triggered by events or circumstances in anyone's life such as bereavement, relationship breakdown, financial problems, exams, adverse working conditions, bullying, injury, after giving birth, after an accident, after any trauma, if you are suffering from a chronic painful condition, or any prolonged illness.
Chronic and prolonged stress leads to higher levels of stress hormones which in turn can lead to higher levels of inflammatory cytokines(messenger cells), resulting in chronic inflammation in our body and brain and has the capability of affecting nearly every organ in our body, sometimes leading to Autoimmune Disorders or other stress related illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, paralysis, depression, digestive disorders, skin diseases, cancer and much more, thats why it is important to consult your G.P first to rule out any serious illness or before starting any regime.
Many of us do not associate our symptoms with a response to some ongoing stress in our daily life. That's why it is essential to identify the early signs of stress and do something about it in order to avoid the sometimes devastating but avoidable consequences.
Recent findings confirm that stress is a factor in five out six major cause of death-Heart disease, Stroke, Cancer, Lower respiratory disease, and Accidents.
