29/7/2019

Athlete’s foot is a condition where skin in between the toes and the side of the foot is inflamed and infected with fungus, it is usually red raw with weepy skin and blisters. The medical name for Athlete’s foot is Tinea Pedis, you could pick up this condition in locker rooms, gyms, swimming pools, communal showers especially when walking barefoot. It can also spread directly from person to person. In the defence forces this condition is also known as Jungle Rot.

Signs and Symptoms: In the majority of cases the feet could be smelly or just dry skin but it can progress to burning and stinging if not treated and can sometimes be unbearable and affect the performance of an athlete. In more severe cases cracking with pain and itching between the toes with blisters. Nails could also get infected.

Is athlete’s foot contagious? Potentially yes, but some individuals are more susceptible than others. Especially people who sweat excessively and diabetics.

Usual treatment: dry, clean environment for the feet, antiperspirants are used, doctors also recommend bathing your feet in Barrows solution but it is advisable before starting any treatment to consult your doctor for diagnoses and treatment.

Home remedies: some shampoos, Epsom salts, some people use diluted white vinegar but please do not try this or any other treatment without asking your doctor.

In more severe cases your doctor might advise local or oral anti fungals especially when nails are involved. Other complications include spreading to other areas of the body or to other people. Other natural remedies are Tea tree oil etc.

Foods that can be good are: probiotic cultures, green leafy vegetables, nuts, avacadoes, salmon, ginger, garlic, asparagus, fresh mint and red wine in moderation.

Lifestyle changes such as mild exercise daily such as walking, mindfulness, counselling and swimming might help relieve pain. Laser acupuncture can ease pain and promote sleep

The aim of Acupuncture is to restore and maintain health through the stimulation of specific points on the body. Traditionally this treatment has been carried out using needles but modern advances have introduced two new methods - Electro-acupuncture and Laser-acupuncture - both of which offer a no needle alternative to the traditional approach.

The most common use of laser acupuncture is to treat specific conditions especially skin conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, ulcers. Laser acupuncture has also been noted to promote sleep, minimises anxiety, pain and the withdrawal symptoms for those trying to quit smoking. Laser acupuncture is extremely popular therapy usually performed by Doctors, Naturopaths, Chiropractors and other practitioners for relieving tension in the muscles, reducing muscle irritability, reducing Inflammation, and improving circulation, nutritional absorption, especially to the muscle, skin, soft tissue, tendons, and ligaments giving great results for musculoskeletal conditions such as stiffness, sports injuries, arthritis, fibromyalgia and old injuries.

There are so many conditions (digestive and menstrual disorders) which can be helped with this treatment and Dr Bhatti has been using this and other complementary care systems successfully for more than 30 years.

In the Holistic Health Clinic, Dr. Bhatti uses a multi pronged approach in treating this and many other conditions with evidence based therapies such as Micro-immunotherapy, Physiological Regulating Medicine (P.R.M), Gut Health and Microbiome restoration, Nutritional and Nutraceutical therapies, Lifestyle Medicine, Natural Hormonal Balancing, Glandular support, Soft tissue and joint support, Complex Homeopathy, Herbals, and Needle free Medical Acupuncture, Therapeautic Mindfulness and CBT techniques to achieve excellent results.

Frozen shoulder, also known as Adhesive Capsulitis which means sticky shoulder describes this condition accurately it occurs in about 5% of the population. More common in women than men, most ladies in the beginning of the condition may find it hard to reach the clasp of their brassier, back pockets, worse at night and when lying on the affected side can be excruciating and affect sleep.

Usually it hits people between the ages of 40 – 60 and be associated with other diseases such as Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Metabolic Syndrome (obesity, blood sugar issues and chronic low grade inflammation). Frozen shoulder can also be associated with trauma, hypothyroidism, menopause, smoking and other chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s, stroke etc.

There are 3 phases of the symptoms of frozen shoulder:
Phase 1: Freezing also known as the painful phase it can last from 2-10mths
Phase 2: The frozen stage, when the shoulder becomes stiff and movement is limited which can last from 9 to 14mths. The pain is more frequent with over use.
Phase 3: Thawing which could take from 3mths to 1 year or more.

Some scientists believe that sedentary lifestyle leading to low activity or injury near the shoulder joint or a major surgery can be a trigger this condition.

Dr Bhatti has been treating frozen shoulder with a complementary approach for more than 25 years and his experience shows that earlier intervention, combination of conventional, complementary therapies, physio and exercise can sometimes give great results.
In complementary therapies which can give positive results are :
  • Medical Needle Free Acupuncture
  • Laser Acupuncture
  • Medical Trigger Point Therapy/Needle free Mesotherapy
  • Nutrition/Natural joint and soft tissue support
  • Conventional therapies usually include :
  • Medication
  • Physio
  • Surgery and homecare

Other conditions which mimic frozen shoulder are:
  1. Bursitis

  3. Wear and tear of shoulder joint
  4. Inflammation of Bicep tendon
  5. Pain coming from the neck due to disc deterioration in the cervical area
  6. Autoimmune diseases such as Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis and sometimes cancer.

Physiological Regulating Medicine - An evidence based therapy with excellent results

11/7/2019

PHYSIOLOGICAL REGULATING MEDICINE is based on a revolutionary idea in the medical field. It restores the initial physiological condition of a sick body by using the similar biological molecules that are usually present in the body and which control and guide its function to a healthy condition.

These molecules include:

  • Hormones (Endocrine system)
  • Cytokines (immune system messengers)
  • Growth factors which are essential tissue regulating and stimulating molecules.

It has been acknowledged that these substances play a decisive role in determining whether our body is in a healthy or diseased state. At present a lot of international medical research is focusing on the study of messenger molecules, the positive (causes healing) and negative (causes disease). These remedies can play a great role in boosting immunity, reducing inflammation and pain. They can also help prevent and calm allergic reactions.

**Every disease is an expression and consequence of changes in the messenger molecule and its concentration, either there is an increase or a reduction of these concentrations according to studies**

What is causing my dizziness & can micro-immunotherapy help?

10/7/2019

Dizziness (lightheadedness) means different things to different people usually it is not a sign of something serious but if you are suffering from this condition then you should consult your doctor and get it investigated and treated.

Sometimes it is difficult to identify and isolate the reason for your dizziness and your G.P might have to refer you to a specialist or an emergency room, especially if your dizziness is associated with headaches, chest pains, fainting, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, tinnitus or hearing loss, fever or other signs and symptoms of infection.

I sometimes tell my patients to keep a diary of symptoms how did it all start and how it progressed, and any association to part of the day and if anything makes it worse.

Common causes:
1. Ear infection
2. Stress & Anxiety
3. Migraine
4. Meniere’s disease ( vertigo )
5. Head injury
6. If you are a diabetic or if you suffer from low blood sugar levels
7. low blood pressure
8. If you suffer from hardening of the blood vessel supplying your brain
9. If you are suffering or recovering from a severe illness
10. If you are abusing alcohol or drugs
11. Irregular heart rhythm
12. Some blood pressure medication and anti depressants can cause lightheadedness
13. Malabsorption and Malnutrition
14. Candida / Leaky gut,
15. Chronic fatigue etc...
16. In severe case it can be associated with chest pain, heart attack or meningitis. It is always important to immediately (urgently) seek medical attention and treatment.

Once the reason for your dizziness is identified by your doctor complementary therapies can be very useful. Acupuncture has been used for centuries to treat dizziness. Combination of therapies such as Low dose medicine, lifestyle medicine, nutritional therapy, gut health and microbiome restoration, living a mindful lifestyle can all help.

Micro-immunotherapy can play a very positive role depending on the cause of dizziness especially if your immune system is involved, this treatment can be safely used in adults as well as kids.

Dr Bhatti is qualified medical doctor who has worked in all the main hospitals in Galway and has more than thirty years experience in complementary medical care.

Healthy scalp & healthy hair - Nutrition & dermaceuticals can play a vital role

9/7/2019

According to the American Academy of Dermatology here are a few tips to keep your hair healthy:
  • If you have oily hair you should wash it more frequently
  • Chemically treated or dyed hair should be washed less often
  • As you grow old your scalp produces less oil, hence you should wash it less frequently
  • If you suffer from flaky scalp it may be dandruff or some other condition such as psoriasis if you are not sure you should get it checked.
  • Use shampoo on the scalp area instead of whole length of hair
  • Use a 2 in 1 conditioner for convenience or use a conditioner after every shampoo
  • Apply conditioner on the tips of the hair
  • Choose a shampoo and conditioner formulated for your type of hair
  • Before you go swimming you should wet and condition your hair or wear a swimming cap.  You can get a special swimmers shampoo and conditioner to replace lost moisture.
  • Balanced nutrition plays a vital role for healthy scalp and healthy hair. But if you have a problem scalp micro-immunotherapy can be of great benefit.
