Crohn's Disease

30/7/2018

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease which can affect any part of the gastrointestinal system or other parts of the body from mouth, oesophagus, stomach, intestines and colon. It usually affects the lower end of the small intestine and the start of the colon area. It is also known as ileitis, regional enteritis and colitis, resulting in ulceration bleeding and scar tissue.

Symptoms:
1. Diarrhoea which can be bloody at times leading to iron deficiency anaemia.
2. Abdominal pain
3. Bloating especially after meals.
4. Patients are afraid to eat which can lead to loss of weight and sometimes malnutrition.

Causes:
  • The cause of this disease is unknown but scientists think it starts with inflammation which can affect the immune system and is caused by the bacteria in the intestine.
  • This disease can run in families.
This is the disease of young people usually between 20-30 years old but can also affect kids in turn can affect their growth and can cause stress and depression leading sometimes to social isolation and other emotional issues.
It usually starts with inflammation causing ulcerations which can spread leading to scars and narrowing of the bowel ,which can lead to an intestinal obstruction if left untreated. This disease can also lead to another complication known as a fistula which can sometimes be helped by surgical intervention.

If you think you are suffering from crohn’s you should see your doctor who might refer you to a gastroenterologist for investigations, diagnosis and treatment to avoid sometimes very serious complications.

There are other inflammatory bowel diseases which have to be ruled out especially ulcerative colitis in which the inflammation is mostly superficial and uninterrupted in the colonic area while inflammation of crohn’s is deeper, patchy and interrupted and can begin anywhere in the body such as the joints causing arthritis, osteoporosis, it can affect the eye sight, invades skin causing a condition called Erythema Nodosum, also gall bladder causing gallstones.

Treatment depends on it's severity:
  1. Steroids, Aminosalicylates and Antibiotics
  2. Immunosuppressant’s
  3. Biological Medicines.
  4. There are new biological medicines being developed showing promising results.

In severe cases when medication fails to work, surgical intervention might be the only answer. As this disease can be associated with nutritional deficiencies, psychological stress and emotional issues, complementary therapies can offer some help such as Laser medical acupuncture, Natural gut and microbiome restoration therapy, Nutritional therapy, Cognitive behavioural therapy, Mindful nutrition, mindful eating and other new therapies offered in our clinic.

CBT Techniques

Cognitive behavioural therapy is a type of talk therapy which can work nearly as well as medication and sometimes even better in some people with mild Depression and Anxiety. It works well if you combine it with medication in moderate to severe cases such as using anxiolytics and antidepressants.
A therapist can help you identify the negative thoughts and try and replace them with positive thoughts. The therapist can also help you overcome your guilt and low self esteem. The techniques you learn with your therapist will last you for a lifetime and you can apply them in your everyday life, home and work.
It is very important for people who are taking medication for depression, anxiety or anything else never to stop unless advised by your doctor. It is important to tell you doctor if you are starting any new therapy or treatment including diets or supplements etc.

Dream Therapy

27/7/2018

Very soon you will be able to record your dreams - this could happen in 1-2 years. Japanese scientists are using functional magnetic resonance imaging to reconstruct images from a working person's mind.
Dream therapy is now being provided in the Holistic Health & Stress Clinic. New research shows that everyone dreams, even the people who claim they don't. People who suffer from depression have longer periods of R.E.M sleep, linked directly to unconscious emotional processing. So, it is possible that the symbols in dreams can sometimes give a therapist some understanding and may be the solution to a person's depression. We dream 4-6 times a night and we forget 90% of our dreams.
Sigmund Freud believed that if an analyst interpreted the dream for an anxious patient that could lead to the resolution of the psychological problem. While Carl Jung disagreed with Freud's theory and argued that dreams serve a compensatory function. For example, if outlook is one-sided in our conscious stage towards an issue, our dreams can warn us about it so we can modify our behavior - looks like both Freud and Jung were correct in their own ways.

Old World Diseases - are they making a comeback?

24/7/2018

1. BLACK DEATH or BUBONIC PLAGUE
Who would have believed that something we thought was from the History books would make a comeback?
Recently it has showed up in California, Colorado and New Mexico. It is usually spread by the fleas who live on rodents.
2. T.B. (Tuberculosis)
Although not as prevalent as it used to be, it is getting harder to treat due to resistance to antibiotics used for its treatment.
3. SYPHILLIS and CHLAMYDIA
These were almost eradicated but are back with a vengeance according to the recent international reports. They are also getting harder to treat.
4. SCARLET FEVER
This is mostly due to the bacteria responsible for it becoming resistant to antibiotics. It usually affects children between 5 and 15.
5. MEASELS
The comeback of this disease could be due to lack of uptake in vaccines, usually children under 5 or adults over 20 suffer from this condition and sometimes with very serious consequences.
6. MUMPS
This is another illness which doctors are encountering frequently. The outbreaks usually happen in an area where lots of people are living in close proximity, such as hostels, barracks etc.
7. WHOOPING COUGH
The best prevention for Whooping Cough is vaccination, as advised by the World Health Organisation. It is serious at any age especially in babies.
8. LEGIONNAIRES DISEASE
This is a lung infection caused by breathing the bacteria responsible which hides inside water droplets sometimes in air conditioning plants and even in showers but can be successfully treated with antibiotics if caught in time, otherwise it may cause serious complications especially in the elderly.
9. LEPROSY
Leprosy is also known as Hansen’s disease. It usually attacks the nerves of the extremities, face etc. Each year about 250,000 people suffer from it worldwide with serious consequences. This disease is hard to diagnose but easy to treat especially if caught early.
10. POLIO
We still see cases worldwide especially in countries with low uptake of vaccine. As it affects the brain it can be life threatening and is a very disabling condition.
11. GOUT
This is also on the rise. It is due to an increase of uric acid in the blood. If you are overweight it can double your chances of getting this very painful condition, usually affecting the big toe, but it can affect any joints especially the lower limbs. Changes in lifestyle and Nutritional Therapy can help a lot in the prevention and treatment of this disease. Always consult your G.P. if you suspect you are suffering from this or any other condition.
12. RICKETS
This occurs due to lack of vitamin D which can lead to softening of bones in children. Increase seems to be due to children spending less time in the sun due to fear of skin cancer.
13. SCURVY
Scurvy was also known as Sailor’s disease back in the day, is due to lack of vitamin C. It can cause bleeding gums and sometimes the teeth could fall out.
Common in people not eating enough fresh fruit and vegetables, elderly with malnutrition and people with alcoholism. Men who live alone are also quite susceptible to it hence it is also known as Widowers Scurvy.
At the Holistic Health and Stress Clinic Dr Bhatti specialises in weight loss the natural way and treatment of painful conditions such as arthritis, back, neck, shoulder and hip pain. He also treats migraine, stress and anxiety, digestive disorders, menstrual disorders, skin conditions by combining natural therapies such as needle free acupuncture, nutrition, lifestyle medicine, gut health, microbiome restoration, low dose medicine (L.D.M.), mindfulness and CBT techniques which is a new and novel approach giving excellent results.

Low Dose Medicine - A Quiet Revolution

24/7/2018

By Dr Bhatti, M.B.B.S.D.C.H.R.C.P.S.I
Low dose medicine treats the cause, not the symptoms, with virtually no side effects. It uses S.K.A (Sequential Kinetic Activation) to make safe but very effective remedies to prevent and treat illnesses with excellent results.  L.D.M treats the human being as a whole, not just the disease, and considers the human being as a mind body unit with his/her individuality which is an important part of the L.D.M concept.

No medicine can be more organic, effective and safe than that which follows the rules of nature, by using biological molecules also known as messenger molecules it can restore the body’s physiological condition (health) by repairing the damage caused by a disease.

Here are some of the conditions helped by L.D.M:
1. Allergies(Asthma,Hay Fever,Food Allergies)
2. Anxiety/ Mood disorder/ Mild depression
3. Low immunity frequent colds and flus
4. Pain and painful conditions(Sports Injuries)
5. It can be safely used in children
6. Menstrual disorders
7. Osteoporosis
8. Inflammation (the root cause of many diseases)
9. Skin conditions, eczema, psoriasis
10. Digestive problems, irritable bowel, Leaky Gut Syndrome
11. Parasites/worms
12. Lyme's disease
13. Fibromyalgia
14. Chronic fatigue
15. Rheumatism and Arthritis to name a few

What is causing my allergy?

23/7/2018

One in every 5 people may suffer from Allergies which happens when your immune system reacts to an allergen and the result could be very mild or very severe even leading to an anaphylactic shock, so it is important with the help of your doctor to try and identify your allergens and then try to avoid them. Reaction to stress can also cause a rash or exacerbate an allergic reaction such as Urticaria, Eczema, Psoriasis and Asthma.
  • House Dust: house dust mite live on your pillow, mattress and carpets. It feeds on our dead skin and its droppings produces dust which can cause allergies such as eczema, rhinitis and asthma.
  • Colourings and Preservatives in your food
  • Your jewellery especially nickel can result in a rash around your neck, ear lobes and wrist or hands.
  • Latex glove allergy has become quite common due to its widespread use at home and at work, especially if you are working in a health clinic or a hospital. It can result in hives, rash, itch and sometimes with difficulty in breathing.
