What is causing my headaches?

28/6/2018

Nearly everyone in the world has suffered with a headache at least once in their lifetime some more than the others. Headaches can be mild, severe and disabling. There are several types of headaches with different causes here are some of them:
  1. Cheese especially aged cheeses; it is an amino acid tyrosine in it which can trigger migraine. Keeping a migraine notebook can help you identify the triggers.
  2. Strong Odours can lead to Migraine such as perfumes, chemicals, paint, bleach, fried foods, and smoke.
  3. Ponytail headache syndrome especially in people suffering from Fibromyalgia as their skin can be very sensitive to pain.
  4. Alcohol: sometimes half an hour after taking it or the day after the hangover, leading to cluster headaches and can be a frequent trigger of migraine.
  5. Skipping a meal or if you are dieting or fasting, when your body glucose becomes low.
  6. Eye strain, especially if you have vision problems or if you have been looking at your computer screen or phone screen for prolonged periods. If that seems to be a trigger for your headaches, then it’s time to visit your optician or doctor and get your eyes tested.
  7. **Individuals with severe unexplained headaches which lingers and associated with nausea, vomiting, stiff neck, fever, weakness, chest pains, breathing difficulties etc should immediately consult their Doctor or go to the emergency department in the hospital ,as it could save your life.**

Some of the other causes of headaches can be:

Stress, watching too much TV, Hypoglycaemia, Colds / Flu’s, Infections, Lack of sleep, PMT, Head injury, Low B.P, Eye strain, head gear, Ice cream freeze, too much pain medication, Sinus, meningitis, concussion, substance abuse, dehydration, nerve pain esp. trigeminal neuralgia, chronic cough, after exercise Allergies and many more.

The Benefits of Green Tea

25/6/2018

Green tea is a perfect adjunct to other healing herbs. Although you would not be growing it in an Irish herb garden it can be introduced easily into our daily routine.

Both green and black tea come from the same plant called the Camellia Sinensis bush. It is the processing of the tea leaves which will determine whether it becomes green or black tea. Green tea is made from tea leaves which are steamed first and dried soon after they are harvested.

Green tea still contains the compounds that have antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral and health enhancing properties. These compounds can penetrate the cells of the body and then protect them from the free radicals.

Research has shown that green tea can protect against cancer, lower cholesterol levels and reduce the clotting tendency of the blood thus reducing the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and increasing the risk of a Heart Attack and a Stroke. It shows great promise as an aid to weight loss as it can promote the burning of fat and helps to regulate the blood sugar and insulin levels.

Green tea also stimulates the immune system, can fight tooth decay, combats mental fatigue and can be good for asthma suffers. It may also help to prevent enlarged prostate.

To benefit from green teas antioxidant properties it should be drunk without milk. (Milk is thought to bind with the beneficial compounds making them unavailable to the body.)

Green tea could be easily introduced into our lives as an enjoyable and refreshing drink as well as a very positive and preventative agent for the body as a whole. A word of warning that it does contain a small amount of caffeine especially for people who suffer from caffeine related symptoms palpitations, anxiety, stress and people who suffer from cardiac related disorders etc...

Nutrients contained in green teas are; amino acids, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, and C.

Always consult your G.P. before starting any new regime or self treatment. The contents of this article are for informational purposes only and are not intended to prevent, diagnose or cure any medical conditions. We acknowledge the contribution of all authors and researchers.

Nutritional Therapy

Nutritional therapy not only looks at a person's deficiencies of vitamins and minerals but also assesses whether there are problems in digestion, toxic overload or the need for extra nutrients.  Nutritional therapy is a safe, gentle approach based on scientific research and knowledge and has been used very successfully to help imbalances in females hormones, headaches, chronic fatigue, candida, mood swings, allergies, irritable bowel, bloating, weight gain and skin problems.

Dr Bhatti firmly believes we are what we eat. Any chronic illness or chronic and ongoing stress can have a direct or indirect effect on a person's nutritional status, which may lead to a host of physical and emotional conditions.  Read more about Nutritional Therapy.

Always consult your General Practitioner for any medical advice or before starting any self treatment or regime.

Why some overweight and obese people find it hard to lose weight

23/6/2018

Recent studies have shown that just educating people about nutrition and healthy low calorie foods alone is not enough.

The study found that the majority of this group of people who are obese and overweight have a different attitude towards food, to them the taste of the food supersedes everything else, and they were found to have a totally different attitude towards exercise and healthy living.  They hardly pay any attention to food labels and usually do impulsive buying and eat inexpensive and high calorie food items. Many believe that healthy foods are more expensive.  Studies confirmed that most overweight people were aware that they should eat healthy but they would still ignore the nutritional labels and would opt for cakes, biscuits, pastries, buns, fizzy drinks and fried foods. These foods are full of trans fat, saturated fats, high sugar content and may contain colourings and preservatives.  They also have a preference to ready meals quick snacks and a high carb diet rather than preparing and cooking a healthy meal.

This lifestyle can easily lead to disease like Diabetes, Heart disease, High blood pressure, Strokes, Digestive disorders, inflammatory conditions, Arthritis and Cancer.

Stress and Depression can play a big part towards impulse eating which can lead to stress related illnesses. People suffering from Candida and leaky gut syndrome can also lead to cravings, impulsive and emotional eating, they would usually prefer large portions and go for second and third helpings.

At our Holistic Health & Stress Clinic in Ross house Galway we treat stress related illness with a new and exciting treatment Physiological Regulating Medicine (P.R.M) and using a combination of therapies such as Gut Health and Micro biome restoration, Life style medicine, Needle Free Medical Acupuncture, Nutritional therapy, Homeopathy, Herbals, Physiological Regulating Medicine (P.R.M) and a combination of Mindfulness and CBT techniques with good results.

If you feel that you have difficulty controlling your eating habits and it is affecting your health you should consult your general practitioner.

What is causing my Allergies?

18/6/2018

One in every 5 people may suffer from Allergies which happens when your immune system reacts to an allergen and the result could be very mild or very severe even leading to an anaphylactic shock, so it is important with the help of your doctor to try and identify your allergens and then try to avoid them. Reaction to stress can also cause a rash or exacerbate an allergic reaction such as Urticaria, Eczema, Psoriasis and Asthma.
  1. House Dust: house dust mite live on your pillow, mattress and carpets. It feeds on our dead skin and its droppings produces dust which can cause allergies such as eczema, rhinitis and asthma.
  2. Colourings  and Preservatives in your food
  3. Your jewellery especially nickel can result in a rash around your neck, ear lobes and wrist or hand.
  4. Latex glove allergy has become quite common due to its use at home and work, especially if you are working in a clinic or a hospital. It can result in hives, rash, itch and sometimes difficulty in breathing.

Insects:  such as cockroaches have a protein in their droppings which can result in coughing, sneezing and wheezing, some scientists believe they could be the cause of Asthma attacks. Insect bites and stings can sometimes cause very serious reactions, leading to anaphylactic shock.
Pets:  animal dander is a common cause of allergies in humans, avoiding pet hair by vacuuming frequently, one can reduce allergies, reactions can be mild or very serious, investing in a good filtration system can help but expert advice is needed.
Preservatives / Colourings: in your food can cause itch, hives, vomiting, diarrhoea and wheezing especially from eating or drinking food which contains dyes or colourings.
Medications: Lots of people have reactions to medications prescribed or over the counter it can be mild from rash to very serious even life threatening, always consult your GP or call for emergency assistance.
Cosmetics: some ingredients can result in hives and itchy skin after using a product, one in four people can have an allergic reaction to make up, shampoo, body lotion, perfumes, after shave or a hair dye.
Food Allergies: Strawberries, shellfish, eggs, milk, peanuts, soy and wheat are some of the common foods which you could be allergic to. Symptoms could be mild but also potentially life threatening. Always consult your doctor, who may prescribe Epipen for emergencies, you might be given a bracelet or a necklace containing information regarding your allergy.
Fungus / Moulds: can result in itchy red eyes, runny nose, and wheezing. Moulds thrive in damp and moisture laden conditions such as bathrooms, basements and some very old buildings. Good ventilation can help reduce your symptoms. Leaky gut syndrome and Candida can also lead to allergies and intolerances.
Balsam of Peru:  is an ingredient which can be found in cosmetics, perfumes, food and medications. Reaction to it can cause itching, blisters, redness, swelling of lips and tongue as it can be found in flavouring such as vanilla, cinnamon, cough lozenges and haemorrhoid creams.

Naturopathy

18/6/2018

Unhealthy lifestyles, stress, pollutants, poor eating and sleeping patterns, lack of exercise – result in a weakening of the ‘vital force’. It is at this point that viruses, bacteria, allergens and chronic stress take hold.

Naturopathic medicine is a system of medicine that assists in the restoration of health by following a set of specific rules. Understanding and addressing the underlying causes, rather than suppressing the symptoms which jump starts the naturopathic healing process along with changes in lifestyle and balanced nutrition gets rid of body toxins and bolsters defences leading to a happy and healthy life.
