Relationship disharmony can harm your gut health - new findings

15/1/2020

New research suggests that upheaval in a martial or any other relationship can give rise to a whole host of gut related symptoms, increasing the risk of leaky gut syndrome especially if you have a history of anxiety and depression.
Some of the most sensitive topics in martial relationships are money, infidelity and in-laws which can have a devastating effect on mind and health.

Normally our healthy gut lining forms a natural barrier to prevent bad bugs from reaching inside our intestines. But when this lining becomes weak and some cracks and holes appear due to bad bugs especially some fungi (Candida) other pathogens and food waste particles can get into the bloodstream which may lead to inflammation which in turn can lead to an overall change in the gut eco-system. This may lead to a condition called Leaky Gut Syndrome, which has been linked to other conditions such as:

  • Anxiety/Depression
  • Obesity
  • Mental Health issues
  • Cancer

In our clinic we use a multi pronged approach in treating this and many other conditions with evidence based therapies such as Low Dose Medicine (L.D.M,), gut health and microbiome restoration, nutritional and nutraceutical therapies, lifestyle medicine, natural hormonal balancing, glandular support, soft tissue and joint support, complex homeopathy, herbals, needle free mesotherapy and needle free acupuncture to achieve excellent results.

Combat S.A.D. by getting outside for a few hours

13/1/2020

The onset of winter will see most of us feeling a little blue. The reduction in day light hours can make us all feel less active and tired, and many of us will have a tendency to eat more. For some, however, this natural loss of energy and enthusiasm with the change of season is far too strong. When this happens you may be suffering from Seasonal Affected Disorder (S.A.D) or the winter blues.

S.A.D is a recognised form of depression that develops in the winter months and usually disappears in the spring and summer, but some scientists disagree. It is a condition that may display similar symptoms to depression. If you experience a noticeable alteration in your mood, behaviour and sleep with the change from summer to autumn that you may be suffering from S.A.D.

Some people suffering from S.A.D. cut themselves off from family and friends, feel irritable and experience a loss of libido. Generally life becomes a task and for some unbearable with feelings of low self- esteem and sometimes guilt. If you are experiencing these feelings then it is important that you should consult your general practitioner for advice.

Because many S.A.D. sufferers have been helped by light therapy it is suggested that the primary reason for S.A.D. symptoms is the lack of adequate light in the dark winter months. You should try to get outside for between one and two hours every day and avoid using sunglasses.

Seeking psychological support during the darker months can also be very helpful as can light therapy and some of the complementary therapies available such as acupuncture, homeopathy, herbal remedies, massage, reflexology, yoga, mindfulness, CBT and natural restoration of gut bacteria can be complementary.

Usual symptoms of S.A.D. :
Lack of initiative, lack of concentration, weight gain, sudden mood swings, loss of libido, intense fatigue, feeling guilty and worthless, disrupted eating habits, lack of adequate sleep and early morning wakening.

It is essential to consult your doctor before you embark on any self treatment. The contents of this article are for information purposes only and are not intended to prevent, diagnose or cure any medical conditions.

Pain after shingles can last for years - studies show micro-immunotherapy can offer relief

13/1/2020

The most common complication of Shingles is pain, also known as Post Herpatic Neuralgia (PHN) and is due to damage to the skin and nerves after the acute stage of this disease.

Shingles is the result of the reactivation of the Chicken Pox virus in the body, affecting nerves, the reasons aren’t fully understood.

The pain of Shingles or PHN can vary in severity from mild to severe. It can be described from sharp stabbing to burning, constant and sometimes unbearable. The area involved can be sensitive and tender to touch. It can affect work, social and home life, sometimes leading to depression.

The affected area can suffer from tingling numbness and itching. In some cases shingles can occur without a rash, called internal shingles and in rare cases it can spread to internal organs causing serious complications. You should always consult your GP if you suspect you may have Shingles.

Studies have shown that Micro-immunotherapy can help lessen the pain and offer relief for PHN.

Micro-immunotherapy innovative medicines contain high dilutions of interleukins, growth factors and specific nucleic acids (SNA) for the support of the immune system by restoring balance leading to a positive effect on the person’s overall health and defences. It can be successfully used in this or any other inflammatory and autoimmune diseases which are the consequence of imbalance in our immune system. The main object is to restore and correct the functioning of our immune system.

Micro-immunotherapy seeks to regulate the immune response and optimally modulate the inflammation and contributes to correcting the function of the immune system. It can be safely used alongside conventional medicine as an excellent supportive therapy.

Dr Bhatti is the first doctor to practise Micro-immunotherapy in Ireland.

Frozen shoulder, also known as Adhesive capsulitis which means sticky shoulder, describes this condition accurately. It occurs in about 5% of the population. More common in women than men, most ladies in the beginning of the condition may find it hard to reach the clasp of their brassier and their back pockets. It is worse at night and when lying on the affected side it can be excruciating and can affect sleep.

Usually it hits people between the ages of 40 – 60 and can be associated with other diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome (obesity, blood sugar issues and chronic low grade inflammation). Frozen shoulder can also be associated with hypothyroidism, smoking and other chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s, Stroke etc.

Green tea has antioxidant, antibacterial and antiviral properties

9/1/2020

Green tea is a perfect adjunct to healing herbs. Although you would not be growing it in an Irish herb garden it can be introduced easily into our daily routine.

Both green and black tea come from the same plant called the Camellia Sinensis bush. It is the processing of the tea leaves which will determine whether it is green or black tea. Green tea is made from tea leaves which are steamed first and dried soon after they are harvested.

Green tea still contains the compounds that have antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral and health enhancing properties. These compounds can penetrate the cells of the body and then protect them from the free radicals.

Research has shown that green tea can protect against cancer, lower cholesterol levels and reduce the clotting tendency of the blood thus reducing the risk of forming atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and suffering from a stroke.

It shows great promise as an aid to weight loss as it can promote the burning of fat and helps to regulate the blood sugar and insulin levels.

Green tea also stimulates the immune system, fights tooth decay, combats mental fatigue and is good for asthma suffers. It may also help prevent enlarged prostate.

Fibromyalgia & the role of trauma in this very painful condition

8/1/2020

More woman than men suffer from this condition it could be as high as 90% and scientist do not know why that is the case. Usually there is a genetic element to this painful condition and sometimes can only come to light after a traumatic event which could be from an accident, surgery, infection, breakdown in a relationship or PTSD. Other medical conditions such as IBS, Lupus, and Rheumatoid arthritis may trigger the symptoms of this disease. Other diseases like Chronic fatigue, Endometriosis and Inflammatory bowel disease may also co exist with it.

In most of the cases this disease is characterised by tender points on the back, neck and other parts of the body. Recent research links this disease to non restorative sleep disorder (when after a full night’s sleep you still wake up tired) and which can trigger wide spread pain in the body. Research suggests that low serotonin levels may be responsible for this condition and as our gut health plays a prominent role in the production of serotonin and other brain enzymes it is very important that the condition of our gut health is considered when treating fibromyalgia.

Common symptoms of this condition differ from person to person but pain in the muscles with stiffness can be the most prominent symptom along with tiredness, exhaustion, insomnia, headaches, tummy pains, concentration and memory loss giving rise to a condition which is known as fibro fog. Patients suffering from this condition may always have some degree of anxiety and depression and could wake up from sleep with severe headaches, stiffness of muscles, tingling and numbness in arms and legs.

Causes: There seems to be no single cause but scientists link several factors such as genetic, family history, food sensitivities, allergies, hormonal imbalance, candida overgrowth, leaky gut, nerves and vascular element along with stress and anxiety. Further research is needed to understand this complex condition. Resent research suggests something happens to the way our brain processes the perception of pain. Scientists also found the peripheral nerves in the skin were damaged.

In many cases Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy can help but always check with your doctor first.

Treatments: Usually your doctor might prescribe anti inflammatory medication, anti depressants or may send you to a specialist. Complementary and natural therapies include gut health restoration shows promising results as does acupuncture, mindfulness, CBT and yoga.

A combination of therapies such as mentioned above along with lifestyle changes such as mild exercise daily, swimming and a good night’s sleep could help relieve pain, anxiety and stiffness.

To discuss conditions treated and therapies offered at our clinic, contact Dr. Bhatti at (087) 1915051 or email health@drbhatti.ie.   During your first office visit, Dr. Bhatti may ask you at length about your health-condition, lifestyle and behaviour.  Please consult your GP before starting new treatment.
